Tartan Treats

Highland Regional High School
Blackwood, NJ

Self-Contained Multi-Disability

Our life skills and job transition classes opened up an amazing Tartan Treats school store this year to go along with our Tartan Treats website. We also opened up a thrift store with free clothing, hygiene items, school supplies and clothing for students in need. Everything is free in the thrift shop. The purpose of opening up the Tartan Treats school store in addition to our website, was to create a supportive environment where life skills students can practice and enhance their social, academic, and vocational skills. The stores serve as a practical learning lab where students engage in real-world tasks such as inventory management, customer service, creating displays, stocking merchandise and financial transactions. They provide vocational and life skills opportunities that can translate into potential careers post high school. Students continue to practice their kitchen skills while baking our homemade Tartan Treats. The Tartan Treat dog treats are still a big hit but now we are adding cat treats due to many staff requests. Not only are they baking and cooking, they are also creating merchandise using their creativity such as making handmade jewelry.

About the Digitability Work Simulation Program

Digitability believes that skills are best learned through real-world experience and application. That’s why Digitability created the Work Simulation Program: a complete curriculum that teaches work-ready skills in a hands-on way you won’t find anywhere else.

After choosing their classroom’s Work Simulation project, students are “hired” for jobs and begin practicing workplace behavior, managing tasks, using tech skills for independence, self-advocating, self-regulating and more.

Digitability Work Simulations include Bankability, a virtual banking and workplace behavior program where students earn virtual dollars when they exhibit behaviors that will make them successful in the workplace and increase their independence. Using those dollars earned, students experience a modern banking app while learning the fundamentals of budgeting concepts such as earning, spending, and saving.
