18-21 Transition
Students at East Haven are making SnuffleMats for dogs and cats. Snufflemats are interactive feeding mats where owners can hide treats for their pets to uncover, promoting mental stimulation and alleviating boredom in their beloved animals. Students did online searches for materials needed to create the mats. To save money they decided to use fleece blankets from their local Goodwill, which is one of the worksites the students go to weekly. The students had a budget to purchase the blankets and they were able to apply Bankability skills when shopping for their supplies. Students work in pairs to put the mats together. One student uses a pencil point to push the fleece through each hole of the backing, and the other student ties it into a knot. This works on teamwork, fine and gross motor skills, motor planning, time management, and building stamina. One student even designed a flyer to help with marketing their product. Through this project, students receive vocational training and employment opportunities in the pet industry.
About the Digitability Work Simulation Program
Digitability believes that skills are best learned through real-world experience and application. That’s why Digitability created the Work Simulation Program: a complete curriculum that teaches work-ready skills in a hands-on way you won’t find anywhere else.
After choosing their classroom’s Work Simulation project, students are “hired” for jobs and begin practicing workplace behavior, managing tasks, using tech skills for independence, self-advocating, self-regulating and more.
Digitability Work Simulations include Bankability, a virtual banking and workplace behavior program where students earn virtual dollars when they exhibit behaviors that will make them successful in the workplace and increase their independence. Using those dollars earned, students experience a modern banking app while learning the fundamentals of budgeting concepts such as earning, spending, and saving.
