National Disability Employment Awareness Month Activity

Objective

Students will analyze and understand the unique budgeting challenges faced by individuals with disabilities by creating a detailed monthly budget that accounts for key financial constraints, including transportation needs (e.g., accessible transit or paratransit services), assistive technology costs (e.g., mobility devices, screen readers), and ongoing medical expenses (e.g., prescriptions, therapies, specialized care). Through this activity, students will gain an understanding of choices people face, financial literacy, and a deeper awareness of how systemic barriers and additional living costs impact the financial planning and decision-making of people with disabilities.

Directions for this Extension Activity:

In this activity, students will explore how disability-related expenses impact monthly budgeting. Students will be given a fictional profile that outlines key aspects of this person’s life, including their income, living situation, disability-related needs, and personal goals. Using this information, students will create a realistic monthly budget that accounts for basic living costs as well as specific disability-related expenses such as transportation, assistive technology, and medical expenses.

Duration: 25 minutes* [will vary based on students' level of need]

Incorporating Bankability:

Throughout this activity, students can earn dollars for staying on task, completing budgeting scenarios, presenting to the class, and helping their peers during the activity. This encourages participation, positive behavior, and peer support. Current Bankability users can integrate these earnings into their classroom economy. No Bankability account?
